The Court of Appeal rejected the complaint of Giyas Ibrahimov
Baku/17.07.17/Turan: Baku Appeals Court (BCA) rejected the complaint of youth activist Giyas Ibrahimov. Earlier, Ibrahimov's lawyers appealed to the court for violation of the activist's rights to the privacy of correspondence, confidential communication with his defenders. On July 10, the Sabunchu District Court dismissed the complaint. Today, the Baku Court of Appeal considered Ibrahimov's complaint against this decision. The complaint was defended by the lawyer Zibeida Sadigova. She noted that during the detention in Baku pre-trial detention center the activist's rights to confidential communication with a lawyer were violated, his letters to the defender were read by the leadership of the pre-trial detention center. The representative of the detention center in court stated that the letter was open and therefore was read and then sent to a lawyer. Ibrahimov himself said that the letter was not open. He also noted that prisoners are not given normal envelopes to send letters.
BCA declined the complaint.
According to Sadigova, a complaint has already been sent to the European Court of Human Rights in this case. Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov were detained on May 10, 2016 after they wrote political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. They were charged with illegal large-scale drug trafficking and condemned everyone to 10 years imprisonment. The organization "Amnesty International" recognized them as "prisoners of conscience" .- 05B06-
