The court refused to consider the appeal of former OPON members
The Garadagh District Court today refused to accept an appeal of three former members of the special detachment of police (OPON) - Elchin Amiraslanov, Safa Poladov , and Arif Kazimov,serving a life sentence. They asked the court to replace the life sentence of imprisonment for 20 years. Prisoners have been serving sentences from 16 December, and the 20-year term expires on December 16 this year. The three convicts were arrested in connection with the rebellion of OPON in March 1995, and were sentenced to death. In connection with the abolition of executions in 1998, they are automatically assigned a life sentence.
Lawyer Elchin Sadigov noted the invalidity of the decision of Garadagh District Court. According to him, according to the Criminal Code in effect until 2000, a life sentence si replaced with 20-year sentence. The lawyer said that he would appeal the decision. Amiraslanov, Kazimov and Poladov were recognized by the Council of Europe experts as political prisoners.-06D-
