Faramazoglu Denied House Arrest
The Narimanov District Court of Baku did not turn the journalist Fikret Faramazoglu under house arrest, the lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan.
The defense believes the house arrest does not prevent the investigation of the criminal case against the journalist.
The chief editor of Jam.az, Fikret Faramazoglu, was arrested on June 30, 2016 on charges of extortion by threats (article 182 of the Criminal Code).
The Interior Ministry claims that the journalist was arrested on June 30 while taking a bribe from a businessman at a rate of 3,000 manats. The Interior Ministry also states that Faramazoglu together with a group of people got a lot of money from many businessmen and officials, blackmailing them with spread of damning reports about them.
On July 2 the Narimanov court sanctioned the arrest of Faramazoglu for 3 months. After his arrest, he refused of a lawyer.
Faramazoglu was prosecuted 10 years ago, when he was the editor of the newspaper 24 Hours, at the suit of the Interior Minister Ramil Usubov. The court deprived the journalist of freedom for one year then.
In recent years, Faramazoglu was several times summoned to the prosecutor's office, where he was made warnings in connection with the published articles. -0-
