Emin Ibrahimov
The trial of the former diplomat has begun
On February 5, a preparatory hearing was held in the Baku Court for Serious Crimes, chaired by Vugar Ibrahimov, in the case of former diplomat Emin Ibrahimov. The main hearings are scheduled for February 12.
As reported by Turan, Lawyer Aghyl Laidz said that the defense petitioned for the termination of the criminal prosecution and a change of the preventive measure to house arrest, Turan reported. However, the petitions were rejected. At the same time, the court granted the request to allow Ibrahimov to sit next to his lawyers.
Ibrahimov himself spoke during the process. "He said that this is not a court and therefore he does not intend to express any opinion on what is happening. According to Ibrahimov, the court is not legitimate because it cannot make decisions independently."
*Emin Ibrahimov was arrested on July 22, 2024, on charges of inflicting serious harm to health and hooliganism. He faces up to 11 years in prison. On July 24, the court placed him under arrest for 4 months, and on November 19, the arrest was extended for another 2 months.
Emin Ibrahimov previously served in the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2012 to 2016, he was the second secretary of the Azerbaijani embassy in the USA, and from 2016 to 2020, he was the Chargé d'Affaires of Azerbaijan in Uruguay. Later, he left the diplomatic service due to disagreements with the government's policies.
