The defense of the NIDA activist does not agree with the amount of compensation awarded for illegal arrest
Baku/15.03.23/Turan: Today, the Nasimi District Court of Baku decided to pay a monetary compensation for moral damage to Mammad Azizov, a former member of the NIDA movement, his lawyer Fariz Namazli said.
According to him, after the decision of the European Court of Human Rights, which recognized the unlawful prosecution and arrest of Azizov, the Plenum of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan in 2022 acquitted him.
"We went to court and demanded compensation of 100 thousand manats. The court also awarded compensation in the amount of 36 thousand manats. We disagree and will appeal, because other persons in the same case were awarded compensation of 66 thousand manats," the lawyer said.
Azizov was sentenced in May 2014 by the Baku Serious Crimes Court to 7.5 years in prison on charges of organizing mass riots, illegal trafficking of drugs and weapons.
He was pardoned in 2016. In 2021, the European Court recognized the violation of his rights and appointed moral compensation in 20 thousand euros. After that, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan acquitted Azizov and awarded compensation of 36 thousand manats for unjustified detention. ---21B06---
