The Supreme Court did not mitigate the punishment for the brother-in-law of Ali Kerimli
Baku / 06.12.17 / Turan: The Supreme Court rejected the complaint of the brother-in-law of the leader of the Popular Front party Ali Kerimli - Elnur Seyidov to mitigate the punishment.
Elnur Seidov, deputy chairman of OAO Tekhnikabank, was arrested by employees of the former Ministry of National Security in March 2012. Subsequently, the Baku Serious Crimes Court found him guilty under the Articles (178 (fraud), 308 (misuse of official powers), 313 (forgery) and 320 (falsification of documents) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and sentenced him to 7, 5 years imprisonment.
Seyidov denied the charges, saying that he was being pursued because of opposition activities of a relative - Ali Kerimli.
In 2016, in connection with the serving of half the term of punishment and with health problems (suffers from multiple sclerosis) Seyidov applied to the court to mitigate the punishment and transfer to a jail-settlement. However, the Garadagh court rejected the appeal, and the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the decision.
Today, Seidov's cassation appeal was examined. The panel of judges, chaired by Khafiz Nasibov, also rejected Seidov's complaint, despite the fact that he had already served two-thirds of the sentence, Seidov's relatives told Turan.
The defense intends to apply to the European Court of Human Rights. Seyidov is recognized by human rights activist as a political prisoners.-06D--
