Trial in the case of theologian E.Mustafaoglu is coming to end
The judicial investigation in the case of Shiite theologian Elshan Mustafaoglu, who is accused of treason, completed in the Baku Serious Crimes Court. According to the Afghan Mammadov, the lawyer of the accused, during the trial was not provided any substantiated evidence of guilt. "At trial, seven or eight witnesses were questioned, and all they told tales.
For example: "I saw that Mustafaoglu met with someone, and so on. Not any concrete accusation was put forward, particularly such a serious as high treason must be proven. There was nothing of the kind," Mammadov said. According to him, the trial was to give testimony of the former employee of the National Security Ministry, but he did not come even after a month," said the lawyer.
Mammadov believes that if the case will be handed down in the European Court of Human Rights, it would be a shame for Azerbaijan. The next step is a final speech by the prosecutor. The lawyer hopes that the public prosecutor will be objective.
" I do not lose hope that the prosecutor will be objective, and will also take into account that Mustafaoglu has three children," said the lawyer.
Mustafaoglu was arrested on December 16, 2014 on charges under Article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code. He denies the charge, saying that the former employees of MNS demanded that he testify against the head of the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO) Sheyikhulislam Alahshukyur Pashazade, and Rovshan Akbarov, the commander of the compound of General Azerbaijani army. After his failure a lawsuit was filed against him. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 18.
Mustafaoglu was the head of the NGO "The invitation to spiritual purity," and the announcer of the religious programs on TV channels ANS and ITV, collaborated with CMO.-05B-
