Trial on another human rights activist
On July 31, Lankaran serious Crimes Court held a preliminary hearing in the case of Emil Mammadov, head of the NGO "Promoting democracy," said his brother Igrar Mammadov.
Emil Mammadov was detained by police on May 13, and charged with extortion (Article 182.2.2). Salyan court arrested him for three months based on testimonies of Tofig Gasimov, and employee of this NGO.
At today's session of the court Mammadov said that he was arrested at the orders of the chief executive of Salyan region. It is reported that in late December last year he wrote a letter to the President on embezzlement of budget funds allocated for Salyan region.
In turn, Tofiq Gasimov, who is also under arrest, said that he testified against Emil Mammadov after physical pressure. Today, he refuted previous testimonies. The court did not consider the lawyer's request for replacement arrest of Emil Mammadov on house arrest. Judge appointed the trial for August 13. -03B04-
