"Velvet Revolution" Continues in Karabakh

Since June 1, protests have started in the Armenian-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The events started from the blocking of the central avenue in Khankendi. At night, the avenue was unblocked, but protest events continue. The Karabakh news agency JAM News informs that the reason for the protests was a fight with the participation of one of the special forces and the subsequent beating of 20 civilians by 20 special force people. The police not only did not intervene, but also detained the beaten ones, although they were then forced to send the beaten to the hospital. After the protests, a criminal case was opened. Fifteen people were taken to the police, and it is reported that these are mostly those who beat the civilians.

On June 3, the mass action continued, Sputnik Armenia reported.

Protesters demand the resignation of only the heads of local "law enforcement agencies" - the "prosecutor general" Artur Mosiyan, the "head of the police" Kamo Aghajanyan and the "chief of the national security service" Arshavir Garamyan. The resignation of "president" Bako Sahakyan is still out of the question, but this demand is literally in the air.

A member of the "Karabakh parliament" Hayk Hanumyan (who, like Nikol Pashinyan, is a native of the Armenian Ijevan) met with Bako Sahakyan, but has not yet reported the results of the agreements. As eyewitnesses say, the panic in power is visible to the naked eye - not only the "state minister" Araik Harutyunyan and "secretary of the security council" Vitali Balasanyan came to the protesters, but also the heads of the power departments try to calm the people. There is an opinion that they themselves might decide to take advantage of the situation and change the power.

The question of who can replace Bako Sahakyan does not have an unambiguous answer. Several options are considered. This is the former "president" of Karabakh Arkady Ghukasyan, who is considered a "compromise" candidate from Serzh Sargsyan and Robert Kocharyan. And this is also the current "foreign minister" of Karabakh, Masis Mayilyan, who in 2007 was Bako Sahakyan's rival in the presidential elections and has been in deep opposition for ten years.

Another version is the "MP" Hayk Hanumyan, who is trying to mobilize protest moods in Karabakh. In 2016, he was beaten after his participation in a rally in support of the former "defense minister" of Karabakh Samvel Babayan, who in 2017 was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of preparing violent actions against the authorities in Yerevan and is behind bars.

There is another potential candidate - the current "state minister" Araik Harutyunyan, who enjoys quite a lot of public support and heads the "Free Motherland" party, which has a majority in the "parliament". --0---
