How many Armenians are left in Karabakh?
From the very beginning of the anti-Azerbaijani campaign, in connection with the action of civil activists on the Lachin road, the Armenian side has been talking about the "hunger" of 120,000 residents of Karabakh, of which 30,000 are children; but a reliable source is not indicated. The last population census in Karabakh was conducted by Armenians in 2015. Then the figure of 145 thousand was named.
Now they are talking about 120 thousand, but in 2010 the former President of Armenia Sargsyan stated in the “Aravot” newspaper about 100 thousand residents of Nagorno-Karabakh. And the “president” Arayik Harutyunyan, after the 2020 war, complained that he had nothing to feed 35,000 residents of Karabakh.
The former Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan also raised doubts about the figure of 120,000 residents. He gave the layout of 120 thousand people by age and gender. In this layout, there are women, children, the elderly, and the sick, but no men.
The President of Azerbaijan stated in 2021 that 25,000 people currently live in Karabakh. “We have a fairly wide and versatile information about the processes taking place there. Before the war, we knew what was going on there. Of course, we know even now, because they are just below us. The actual number of inhabitants there is 25 thousand. Other figures were also mentioned, saying that more than 50,000 people returned there after the war. But going back doesn't mean staying there. Came back, then went back.
Secondly, we have various technical means, a satellite. We know the number of cars there. We see people moving. As they say, there are other objective means, taking which as a basis, we know exactly how many people live there - a maximum of 25,000,” the President of Azerbaijan said.
Armenian blogger Ishkhan Verdyan also counted the Armenians in Karabakh. (https://www.facebook.com/Ishkhanverdyan). There are now no more than 60 thousand people, he said.
After the 44-day war, residents of Hadrut region (13,000), Shusha region (6,000), Lachin region (9,000) and Kalbajar region (3,000) left Karabakh. Total - 31.000. If we add to this the population of the five regions around Karabakh, it will be 40,000 people.
Further. All urgent servicemen from Armenia left Karabakh. At one time, Robert Kocharyan came up with a cunning system, according to which all military personnel from Armenia were registered in Karabakh. This gave grounds to state that "the defense army of Karabakh consists exclusively of residents of Karabakh." According to the published data, the number of soldiers from Armenia was 20,000.
In total, it turns out that 60,000 people left Karabakh.
It should be noted that until mid-2021, data on Armenians returning there were published on the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense, on the page of the Russian peacekeeping mission in Karabakh. The latest figure for the number of returnees was 52,000. After that, indicators of the number of returnees disappeared.
Finally, quite recently, Armenian MP Vigen Khachartyan admitted in a conversation with local journalists that no more than 40,000 Armenians live in Karabakh. -0-

My brother Jahangir Hajiyev has been in prison for eight and a half years, having a bouquet of severe chronic diseases. For eight years we have been trying to get the penitentiary service to provide him with minimal medical care and medical supervision. During these years he has repeatedly had exacerbations of his heart, blood pressure, hypertensive crises, exacerbations of his hormonal and immune systems, and pancreatic attacks. One time he was even called for an ambulance. Despite our repeated appeals, he is denied transfer to the central medical centre and the sanitary unit in the colony itself.

Azerbaijan has spent much of the past half-year thumbing its nose at the United States and European Union over Western criticism of Baku’s authoritarian political practices. But it appears the West has at least one weapon in its arsenal capable of getting Azerbaijani leaders’ attention.
