The US and British Embassies on the arrest of Tofig Yagublu
Baku / 04.09.20 / Turan: "The U.S. Embassy is disappointed by the September 3 conviction of Tofiq Yagublu on charges that appear to have been fabricated. Mr. Yagublu was denied numerous elements of due process throughout his detention and trial. We call on the Azerbaijani Government to reverse the string of recent politically-motivated detentions, reevaluate Mr. Yagublu’s case, and respect the fundamental freedoms of speech and association guaranteed to all Azerbaijanis under their constitution.
The U.S. Embassy welcomes the recent registration of the REAL political party", - reads the statement of the embassy.
The British Embassy called the court's sentence to 4 years and 3 months imprisonment for Yagublu "worrying". The embassy recalls that in 2014, Yagublu was arrested on politically motivated charges and this was confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights.
“The embassy considers the current accusations similar and calls on the authorities to reconsider the case. These trends are disappointing against the background of progress in the Ilgar Mammadov case and the registration of the Real party,” the British Embassy said. -02D-
