Reality of War Still Exists - Ex-Foreign Minister

Baku / 03.04.19 / Turan: The Azerbaijani public is well aware that it is impossible to liberate the occupied territories through negotiations. The ex-Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Tofig Zulfugarov, said this in an interview with the Chetin Sual (Difficult Question) program of the Turan agency, commenting on the results of the March 29 meeting between Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan.

The reason for this is the position of Armenia, which does not want to liberate the occupied lands. "In such a situation, negotiations cannot benefit. As for international organizations, they think so: "If there is no peace, then at least let it be no war".

Therefore, war can start at any time, Zulfugarov believes.

As for the mention in the statement of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs of strengthening the ceasefire regime and resolving humanitarian issues, the mediators want to show that they are taking some real steps and intend to resolve some issues. Azerbaijan"s interest is in freeing our people from captivity, he said.

With regard to strengthening the ceasefire, the Armenian side has repeatedly raised this, and the co-chairs support them. However, on the same day when the meeting was held in Vienna, Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan stated in the United States that Armenia is ready to seize new territories. This statement was supported by Pashinyan.

"With this in mind, it can be stated that the result of the Vienna talks was that no results were achieved," Zulfugarov stressed.

As for the proposal of Armenia to change the format and join Nagorno-Karabakh to the negotiations, taking into account the statement of Pashinyan that Armenia refuses the principle of "territory for peace", the issue of format becomes secondary.

"Nikol Pashinyan should have stated that we must liberate the occupied territories. This is one of the tasks of the OSCE Minsk Group. Since its inception, it had to provide this. Their mandate is this, but Pashinyan eliminated this mandate with his statement," Zulfugarov noted. -06D-
