Activist Ilhamiz Guliyev detained
Baku/04.12.23/Turan: On December 4, activist and former police officer Ilhamiz Guliyev was detained in Baku.
As lawyer Zibeyda Sadygova told Turan, Guliyev is being held in the Yasamal district police department as a suspect.
He is charged under Art. 234.1 (drug trafficking), under which he faces up to 3 years in prison.
On December 5, Guliyev will appear in court in connection with the investigation’s request for his pre-trial detention.
In October, Guliyev was already administratively arrested for 30 days on charges of “petty hooliganism” and “failure to obey the police.”
This comes after he gave an interview to Abzas Media in which he spoke about how police authorities use “undocumented drugs in political arrests.”
According to human rights activist Rufat Safarov, despite the fact that Guliyev’s voice in the interview was changed by a special program, experts from the Ministry of Internal Affairs established the identity of the speaker.
Guliyev knew that he would be arrested on false charges and underwent a drug examination in advance, which confirmed that he was not a drug user.
According to Safarov, in the last two years, within the framework of the project
USAID (US Agency for International Development) Guliyev provided legal assistance to residents of the Agdam region.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs did not comment on reports of the activist’s arrest. —03/21B06-
