Aliyev proposed to hold Armenian-Azerbaijani talks in Georgia
Baku/08.10.23/Turan: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has taken an important step by proposing to hold peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Georgia after the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh has ended. This important statement was made in a joint press statement with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.
The statement emphasizes Georgia's unique position, bordering both Armenia and Azerbaijan, making it a promising mediator in the effort to facilitate dialogue between these neighboring nations.
President Aliyev emphasized the importance of actively working toward a peace agreement with Armenia. He expressed hope that such an agreement would create a conducive political environment in the South Caucasus, enabling trilateral cooperation involving Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
Aliyev articulated his readiness to initiate bilateral and trilateral meetings in Georgia if Armenia signals its consent to engage in this diplomatic process. He acknowledged that various countries and international organizations have acted as facilitators in the normalization process. However, he underscored the impartial position of both Georgia and Azerbaijan in relation to the territorial integrity of their respective countries, emphasizing their willingness to accept any assistance.
Aliyev further highlighted the significance of Georgia's involvement, considering its historical ties and geographical proximity. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Garibashvili for Georgia's willingness to play a role as an intermediary. Aliyev stressed that Georgia stands ready for this diplomatic role and expects a similar commitment from Armenia. In the event of Armenia's consent, the president affirmed that bilateral and trilateral meetings would promptly commence in Georgia through the relevant channels.
This proposal presents a potential avenue for progress in resolving the longstanding conflicts between Azerbaijan and Armenia, with Georgia's neutral and strategic position being a key factor in facilitating diplomatic efforts towards peace and stability in the region.--0---
