Azerbaijan expresses condolences over death of OPEC Secretary General Barkindo
Baku/06.07.22/Turan: Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov expressed condolences on the death, late in the evening of July 5, of 63-year-old OPEC Secretary General Mohammed Barkindo.
"Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend M.S. Barkindo, who rendered invaluable services in regulating the oil market during the most difficult period...The rebirth of OPEC coincided with his years of leadership of this organization," Shahbazov wrote on Twitter.
Barkindo's passing was reportedly announced by Nigeria's representative to the organization, Mele Kyari, on his Twitter account.
"We have lost our esteemed Dr. Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo. He died around 11 p.m. yesterday, July 5, 2022. It is certainly a great loss to his immediate family, NNPC, our country of Nigeria, OPEC and the global energy community. Information on the funeral will be announced shortly," he wrote.
Chiari also reported that Barkindo passed away hours after his meeting with the Nigerian President and speaking at an energy summit in Abuja.
His last speech said that the world's oil and gas industry was under "siege" for lack of investment in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The OPEC Secretary General called for allowing Iran and Venezuela, the world's two largest oil producers, to trade oil in order to avoid shortages of "black gold. These countries are currently under U.S. sanctions.
Barkindo's career in the oil industry began in Nigeria in the early 1980s. He held various positions with the NNPC and represented Nigeria at the Board of the OPEC Economic Commission.
He served as OPEC Secretary General in 2006, then returned to that position in 2016, and led the organization during a turbulent oil market, including guiding the cartel toward closer cooperation with non-OPEC oil producers.-0-
