European Commissioner on Recent Human Rights Violations in Azerbaijan
The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Neil Muiznieks, urged the Azerbaijani authorities to comply with European standards in the field of human rights.
In a statement, Muiznieks said that it is time for Baku to move from promises to real measures to ensure basic civil rights and liberties, reports the Voice of America.
According to Commissioner Muiznieks, since the last time he visited Azerbaijan in November last year, the country has not shown changes, in terms of greater freedom of expression.
"I am concerned about reports of quickening of repression and restrictions on human rights in the country," said Muiznieks about the situation in Azerbaijan.
"The government is clearly trying to silence the voice of civil society and to suppress any independent judgment," he stated in the document. -02D-
