Marks the 21st anniversary of the occupation of Lachin

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the occupation of the Armenian armed forces Lachin town - an important strategic point on the west of the country through which the road passes between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The attack on the Lachin began after the Armenian occupation of Shusha on May 9.

On the same day, the enemy began to lead by Lachin intense artillery fire from two sides: from the Shushi Armenian. The offensive began on May 11-12 at the Lachin also on both sides.

The city defended the regular army units and battalions of self-defense. However, due to the disorganization of military forces and leadership crisis, the authorities in Baku, was unable to hold the city.

By 0400-0500 18 May enemy military vehicles entered the town of Lachin. Attempts to army units and self-defense forces to drive the enemy out of the city were not successful. In the battle for Lachin Azerbaijani side suffered heavy losses, both from the military and the civilian population. Dozens of civilians were taken prisoner.

The territory of Lachin district is 1,835 square meters. km. Before the occupation the area was home to 120 villages and 48,000 people.

Economy of the region is mainly composed of livestock. During the occupation, along with the socio-economic and cultural sites were destroyed ancient monuments: the cave-temple in the village Hodzhaz (5th century), the Mausoleum "Melik-Ajar" in the village of Dzhidzhimli (14th century), Castle in the village of Kafir Zeyva (17th century ), Bridge over the River Akeri (17th century), etc. -0 –
