ECHR recognises violation of 'Musavat Party's rights

On 16 January, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) announced decisions on two appeals of the 'Musavat' Party. The complaint was filed in connection with the Azerbaijani authorities' ban on holding peaceful assemblies.

‘Musavat’ regarded this as a violation of the freedom of assembly and the right to effective legal remedies, the legal information website aihmaz.org reported.

During the communication, ‘Musavat’ rejected the government's proposal for an amicable settlement. The authorities then submitted to the ECHR a statement of readiness to recognise the violation of rights.

On this basis, the ECHR ruled that the Azerbaijani government should pay compensation for each of the two applications: EUR 1,350 for moral damages (EUR 2,700 in total) and EUR 225 (EUR 450 in total) for court costs.

The Party was represented at the ECHR by lawyer Neymat Kerimli.
