Strasbourg court upholds complaints from 10 opposition members of Azerbaijan
Strasbourg court upheld the complaint of 10 citizens of Azerbaijan and recognized the government’s violation of their rights, which are guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, Turan was told by Asabali Mustafayev who represented nine of these citizens.
The case was about people who were arrested for participating in a protest action on October 16, 2003 - the day after the presidential election. They are activists of the "Musavat" party: Hasan Mammadov, Bahruz Asadbeyli, Elshad Mammadov, Saleh Aliyev, Emin Huseynli, Shirali Hamidov, Sadiq Dashdamirli, Ramiz Guliyev, a human rights activist and religious leader, Ilgar Ibrahimoglu, and the head of the NGO "Officers in reserve and retired" Yashar Jafarli.
They disputed the legality of their arrest. The Strasbourg Court has ruled in their favor based on evidence of a violation of their right to liberty and to a fair trial.
The Court passed a ruling for the governement to pay E.Mammadov 12,000 euros, Ibrahimoglu 12,400 euros, and all the rest 10,000 euros.—06B-

Baku's Khatai District Court on 7 November considered a petition to place 'Abzas Media' building director Ulvi Hasanli under house arrest. The hearing took place after the working day at 19.15, lawyer Zibeida Sadygova said. This was due to Hasanli's refusal to participate in the trial online, and he insisted on attending the trial.
