Aytaj Tapdyg
The Appeals Court left the Meydan TV journalist in custody
On January 30, the Baku Appeals Court rejected the appeal of the journalist Aytaj Tapdyg, who was arrested in connection with the Meydan TV case, her lawyer, Javad Javadov told Turan.
"Aytaj Tapdyg participated in the hearing and stated that she has been working for Meydan TV for more than 10 years and that her arrest is related to her journalistic activities. The defense supports this position and believes that Article 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights has been violated," the lawyer noted.
According to him, even if there were objective grounds for criminal prosecution, there was no justification for her arrest. The lawyer stated that the journalist’s arrest will be contested at the European Court of Human Rights.
*On December 6, 2024, employees of Meydan TV, including Aynur Elgunesh, Aytaj Tapdyg, Khayala Agaeva, Aysel Umudova, Natig Javadli, freelance journalist Ramin Deko (Jabrailzade), and media expert Ulvi Tairov were detained on suspicion of currency smuggling. On December 8, a court arrested them.
The journalists linked the criminal case to their professional activities. Human rights defenders have recognized them as political prisoners.
