In the Lankaran Court of Grave Crimes today began the proceedings against Emil Mammadov - head of the NGO Promotion of Democracy from Salyan.
Mammadov was detained on 13 May and was arrested on charges of extortion (Article 182.2.2). Grounds for arrest were evidence given by Tofig Gasimov, employee of Mammadov’s NGO.
The lawyer Fariz Namazly told Turan at today's meeting his client gave evidence.
He denied the allegations and said that he was arrested on the basis of false and defamatory accusations. As the director of the NGO said, he was involved in human rights activities, reported on violations in the area and embezzlement of budget funds.
Mammadov said that he never extorted money from the victims. All of them are local officials and testified under dictation of the management of the area.
The next hearing on the case is scheduled for September 5. At this meeting, it is expected to address the second defendant, Tofig Gasimov and examination of the victims.
Local human rights activists have recognized Mammadov a political prisoner. -03B06-

She claims that the district election commission is refusing to provide the necessary forms for her authorized representatives.

On January 15, the Tbilisi Court of Appeals rejected the appeal of Afghan Sadigov, the founder of the Azel TV website, who had protested his extradition to Azerbaijan. Sadigov’s wife, Sevinj Sadigova, stated that this was the final judicial instance in Georgia making a decision on the case, Turan reported. On the other hand, lawyer Mariam Kvelashvili informed Turan that the defense would continue legal steps to prevent the extradition of Afghan Sadigov. According to his wife, Afghan has been on hunger strike for 117 days, and his health is critical.

On January 15, the Yasamal District Court rejected the motion to change the detention measure for Azer Gasymly, the director of the Institute of Political Management, his lawyer, Agyl Laidj, to Turan. "Azer Gasymly stated during the trial that the charges against him were fabricated and related to his socio-political activities," the lawyer said. An appeal will be filed against the court's decision.
