Turkish intelligence chief discussed settlement of the Kurdish issue with Ocalan
The Chief of the Turkish Intelligence Service (MIT), Hakan Fidan visited in prison the leader of Kurdish separatists sentenced to a death penalty, Abdullah Ocalan. According to Turkish media, Fidan discussed with Ocalan ways to resolve the Kurdish problem.
The meeting took place at the end of last week on the island of Imrali in the Sea of Marmara, where Ocalan is serving a life sentence. It was the first meeting of the Turkish intelligence chief with the leader of PKK held after August 10 presidential elections.
The newspaper Cumhuriyet believes these negotiations will "give guarantees" for the Kurdish settlement.
Before that Fidan personally met with Ocalan several times. In addition, other intelligence officials also discussed with him the prospects of normalization. The Turkish Government expects that by the end of September the settlement will enter its final stage, including the final withdrawal of the PKK combat units from Turkey, the rebels’ return to their families if they did not participate in attacks, and their rehabilitation. -02D-
