Why Will Ilham Aliyev Travel to Georgia?
Tbilisi / 12.10.15 / Turan-BSPRESS: The government delegation headed by President Ilham Aliyev will visit Georgia on November 6, the press service of the government of Georgia reports.
The agreement on the visit was reached during the visit of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to Baku on 10 October.
At the meeting, which lasted three hours, Garibashvili and Aliyev discussed regional security issues and the importance of cooperation in energy, transport and infrastructure. Azerbaijan will remain the main supplier of natural gas to Georgia, even if the gas pipeline transit from Russia increases, informed the special representative of the Georgian Premier Zurab Abashidze.
Georgia has not bought Russian gas since 2007 and its major supplier is Azerbaijan. But Georgia receives 10% of the total volume of Russian gas transit to Armenia.
"We receive gas from Russia for many years. It is part of the transit, which we allow in the direction from Russia to Armenia. If the transit volume increases and we get more gas, I do not see anything wrong with this. Azerbaijan is and will remain our strategic partner in this regard," Abashidze said on October 9.
Excitement about the Russian gas started after the Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze agreed with the head of Gazprom Alexei Miller to increase the transit of Russian gas. According to him, the main supplier of gas to Georgia is Azerbaijan, but the authorities think about the diversification of energy sources. In this regard, they actively discuss the matter with Iran. -02D-
