Tofig Yagublu: Azerbaijan expects political "thaw"

Parliamentary elections in Georgia serve as a model to emulate in Azerbaijan and other countries in the region, said Tofig Yagublu, deputy chairman of “Musavat” political party in an interview with "Objective TV" (obyektiv.tv).

Yagublu joined an international group of observers in the parliamentary elections in Georgia, and noted that absolutely equal opportunity was created for the authorities and the opposition, and no one interfered in the electoral process.

Since 1988, Yagublu has been regularly participating in elections in Azerbaijan as an observer. But in Tsalka (Mountain Administrative Region of Georgia), he saw how the ballots are counted after the polls close for the first time.

In Azerbaijan, under various pretexts, observers are always removed from the sites, and sometimes arrested.

"In Azerbaijan, all legislative, administrative and bureaucratic resources - starting with the Electoral Code, and including employees of the passport offices and law enforcement agencies, serve the ruling party," said Yagublu.

One should not expect changes in this in a short time, and the recent scandal with former deputy Gular Ahmedova, who extorted half a million dollars from the Rector of the International University for electing him a deputy, testifies to it.

"Parliament has said nothing about it and no one resigned, which indicates total corruption and cronyism in government," said Yagublu.

In Georgia, the ruling party lost parliamentary elections, and Mikhail Saakashvili openly admitted it. This is a good example for the countries of the South Caucasus.

Ivanishvili was not widely known in Georgian society, but he managed to succeed, and it can be an incentive for the Azerbaijani opposition, which cannot “bring up” a recognized leader for years, said Yagublu.

According to the politician, the events in Georgia will be followed by a political "thaw" in Azerbaijan, and citizens will have political and civil rights and freedoms. -17D—
