Another PFPA Activist Accused of Drug Trafficking
Baku / 11.05.18 / Turan: The activist of the Popular Front Party Mirfeyzullah Seyidov is charged under Article 234.4.3 (illegal drug trafficking in large amounts).
The Narimanov district court on May 10 selected a preventive measure of arrest against him and from there he was transferred to the Kurdakhany pretrial detention center, PFPA told Turan.
The lawyer Javad Javadov joined the defense of Seyidov's rights. In a conversation with Turan, the lawyer said he had not yet been able to meet with Seyidov. About the essence of the accusation, the lawyer has no information. He knows only that the investigation is conducted by the Main Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The lawyer intends to prepare an appeal against the arrest. At the same time he pointed to serious health problems at Seyidov. According to relatives, he suffers from diabetes and kidney disease and regularly undergoes dialysis. On May 11, another procedure was to be held.
Seyidov was an active participant in the national-democratic movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He became the second PFPA activist arrested on charges of illicit drug trafficking last week. Earlier, on May 6, the youth activist of the PFPA Orkhan Bakhyshly was arrested on the same charge. -03D06--

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
