Another Political Prisoner Facing New Charge at End of His Term
Baku / 10.22.18 / Turan: The authorities have laid the foundation for a very bad tendency - they put forward new accusations to political prisoners who are completing their sentences and send them to prison again. This was announced to Turan by the coordinator of the Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners, Oktay Gyulaliyev.
He said the former Minister of Health Ali Insanov, who after 11 years in jail was accused of illegal drug possession in prison, was given another 7 years of imprisonment. The same fate befell the activist of the Popular Front Party Mammad Ibrahim recently. "Unfortunately, this vicious practice has not ended," said the human rights activist.
In late September, a new case was opened against the religious activist Telman Shiraliyev. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison after participating in a protest rally on October 5, 2012 in front of the Ministry of Education. A week before his release, a bradawl was "found" under his pillow and he was accused under Article 317-2.1 (manufacture, storage and carrying a prohibited object in a penitentiary).
According to the human rights activist, the real reason for the new accusation is Shiraliyev"s refusal to write a petition for clemency. Gyulaliyev believes that by so doing the authorities force fear on the citizens.
"However, by such actions they only fuel hatred to themselves," said Gyulaliyev. -05С06--
