Arsonists of Garachukhur Mosque Sentenced
The Baku Court of Grave Crimes convicted the people accused of setting fire to the mosque in the village of Garachukhur on the night of November 26, 2014.
The court sentenced Elnur Alekperov to 15 years in prison, and Namik Nasibov was sent for compulsory treatment. Previously, the state prosecutor asked the court to sentence Alekperov to 15 years, and Nasibov – to 17 years in prison.
The investigation revealed that Namik Nasibov fought in Syria as part of the Kurdish terrorist group PKK in August-September 2014.
On his return to Azerbaijan Nasibov began to create the organization Yekbun, an unofficial wing of the PKK in Azerbaijan, in cooperation with Alekperov. In addition, through social networks, they called for rallies in Baku, as well as published materials containing hatred for the Sunnis and other believers.
Nasibov and Alekperov planned to carry out terrorist attacks in crowded places.
On November 25, they bought 10 liters of petrol and came to Garachukhur. They previously bottled the petrol and produced a flammable mixture. At 2 a.m., they broke the door of the mosque, burned the flammable mixture and threw it inside, which caused a fire.
Alekperov and Nasibov were prosecuted under articles 214.2.1 (preliminary arrangement by a group of persons to commit acts of terrorism) and 228.2.1 (illegal possession of arms by a group of persons in prior agreement). -16D04-
