Azerbaijani human rights activist is awarded the prize named after Theodore Hacker

On May 5, Leyla Yunus, the Azerbaijani human rights activist, Director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy, was awarded the international prize award named after Theodore Hacker.

 
The award ceremony was held in the city of Esslingen-am-Neckar of Germany, in the concert hall of the Neckar Forum in the presence of eminent personalities of the city, as well as visitors from other countries.
 
Yunus was awarded the prize for the courageous struggle in protection of human rights, democracy and the ideals of humanism.
 
Lord Mayor of the city Jürgen Seeger, speaking at the ceremony, praised the contribution of Leyla Yunus in the protection of human rights and civil freedoms in Azerbaijan. He noted that the Azerbaijani government, violating its international obligations, broadly violates the rights and freedoms of citizens, routinely making state violence over people.
 
International reports show a grim picture of human rights in this country, Seeger said, pointing to the fact that on the index of corruption, Azerbaijan ranks the 134th in the world, and on the index of Liberty it ranks the 156th.
 
First time I saw this frail woman last year, during  the Eurovision contest  in May in Baku, when she  participated  in the protest  action in the streets of Baku; I realized what she is difficult  she  conducts against a corrupt regime, said George Restle , the editor of the German TV channel ARD.
 
In her speech Leyla Yunus touched almost all areas of human rights and freedoms, which  the Azerbaijani government brutally violates: unlawful arrests, killings of activists, persecution of the opposition,  banning assembly of people, stifling freedom of  speech, a violation of property rights, human trafficking, etc.
 
She called on the international community to be demand more principally from the authorities of Azerbaijan the cessation of violence against people, respect for the rights and freedoms of its citizens, noting that, along with other civil society activists she will continue to fight for the ideals of freedom.
 
Jürgen Seeger said that Germany, like other countries of the European family will do everything for the development of democracy and protection of human rights in Azerbaijan. He conveyed Yunus the message from President of Germany, Joachim Gauck, who congratulated the human rights activist, and expressed support for her efforts to protect democratic values ​​in Azerbaijan.
 
The prize is awarded every two years to people who have shown courage and valor in defending freedom, democracy, peace and the ideals of humanism. The first winner in 1995 was the Russian human rights activist, Sergei Kovalev. Among the award winners are: Professor of Egypt, Dr.Jehan Sabat (1997), leader of the opposition in Belarus - Victor Gonchar (2000), a lawyer from Turkey, Eren Keskin (2005), a human rights activist from Mexico, Judith Galarza (2007), a human rights activist from Iran, Shiva Nazar Ahari (2011.)
 
Theodore Hacker is one of the most famous representatives of the Catholic existentialism and one of the most radical critics of the Third Reich. He is considered to be one the most important Catholic writers of the period between the two world wars.
 
The city of Esslingen-am-Neckar has founded established the Theodore Hacker Award on the occasion of 50th anniversary of his death in 1995.
