Consideration of the appellate complaint of the blogger M.Huseynov on torture postponed

Appeal of the head of the Institute of Freedom and Safety of Reporters (ISRB) blogger Mehman Huseynov on torture in the police began today in the Baku Appeals Court. The trial was chaired by Judge Gail Mammadov in closed session.

On January 10 this year Huseynov after the trial on the case of his detention, said that he was tortured in the 22nd branch of the Nasimi police. There he was taken after a kidnapping in the center of Baku in the evening of January 9 by a group of people in civilian clothes.

In this regard, the defense appealed to the Baku City Prosecutor's Office to investigate the fact of torture. However, the prosecutor's office refused to open a criminal case. The defense filed a complaint against this decision of the prosecutor's office in court. On March 28, the Sabail District Court rejected the appeal, and the defense filed an appeal.

The lawyers  Fuad Agayev and Elchin Sadigov were presented  the trial records in the court of first instance.

Upon acquaintance with the protocol, the defenders identified shortcomings, inaccuracies and distortions. In this regard, the defense asked for time to present their comments, lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan.

According to him, after submitting comments, the case will be returned to the Sabail court to express the attitude of the court towards them. The statement of Huseynov on torture became the basis of a lawsuit against him on charges of libel. The plaintiff was the head of the Nasimi police, Musa Musayev. Huseynov was sentenced to 2 years in prison.

Many international organizations condemned Huseynov's sentence and regarded his punishment for blogging and human rights activities.-03C06-
