Court of Appeals Keeps Rasul Jafarov behind Bars
Today the Baku Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of the human rights defender Rasul Jafarov to replace his arrest by house arrest. As the Lawyer Gunay Ismayilova told Turan, the decision of the court of first instance (Nasimi Court) was upheld. It was motivated by the fact that Rasul Jafarov may abscond.
Investigation in the case of Rasul Jafarov has been completed. Recall that Jafarov was prosecuted on a common criminal case against several NGOs. But now his case has been separated and will be considered in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes.
Late last week, the investigation put forward new charges against Jafarov - forgery (313) and embezzlement (179.3.2) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. On these charges he could be condemned to 12 years in prison.
* The coordinator of the advocacy campaign Art for Democracy Jafarov was arrested on 2 August on charges of illegal business, tax evasion and abuse of office. On October 23 the deadline for his arrest was extended for another three months. Amnesty International recognized Jafarov "prisoner of conscience». -16D-
