Obama Signs Freedom Support Act for Ukraine
President Barack Obama signed the Freedom Support Act for Ukraine - 2014, which will allow the United States to adopt new sanctions against Russia. Reuters reported on this on December 19.
At the moment, the White House does not intend to extend sanctions, but the law is needed to ensure that the President was able to act with the "European partners and allies" promptly to impose additional sanctions in the event of a catastrophic complication of relations with Russia.
Washington D.C. intends to continue to work with European officers "to improve the current sanctions against Russia."
At the same time, US President stressed that Washington is still interested in economic growth and stability in Russia and is ready for the relaxation of sanctions if Moscow makes the necessary steps.
In particular, Obama called to "end the occupation and unsuccessful annexation of the Crimea and the support of separatists in eastern Ukraine" and to fulfill the commitments made by Russia in accordance with the Minsk agreement.
Prior to this, the US Congress approved and submitted to the President a bill on military assistance to Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia. It provides that anti-Russian sanctions should affect Rosoboronexport and Gazprom in case of reduction of gas supplies to NATO countries, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. -02D-
