Court will consider the extradition of A. Mammadov (UPDATED)
Baku / 17.06.19 / Turan: According to the latest data, Azerbaijani activist detained in Georgia Avtandil Mammadov was brought to Marneuli district police station.
He was detained at the request of extradition from Azerbaijan, human rights activist Ogtay Gulaliyev told Turan with reference to the family members of the activist.
A.Mammadov was prosecuted and put on the wanted list by the Guba Regional Police Department of Azerbaijan. However, it is not clear of what he is accused.
According to Gulaliyev, Mammadov was actively engaged in human rights work in the northern region of Azerbaijan and for this was subjected to threats of criminal prosecution.
In this regard, in 2017, he left Azerbaijan, and moved to Georgia.
The Tbilisi authorities refused to grant him political asylum and the case was pending before the appellate court.
According to Gulaliyev, A. Mammadov harshly criticized the Azerbaijani authorities in social networks.
On May 29, he abruptly spoke in Tbilisi at a rally in defense of the rights of journalist Afgan Mukhtarly, abducted in Georgia and convicted in Azerbaijan.
The human rights activist believes that the reason for the demand of Baku to detain Mammadov could be this speech and the sharply critical statuses of A. Mammadov in recent days on facebook.
Gulaliyev explained, that within 72 hours the court should consider the issue of the extradition of A. Mammadov.
"We believe that Avtandil Mammadov will face here objective investigation, torture, unfair trial. We urge international human rights structures to intervene. A lawyer has already been involved in the defense in Georgia. Georgian NGOs are also aware of and, for their part, are taking steps to release Avtandil Mammadov and prevent his extradition," Gulaliyev said. -06B--
