Activist holding a picket in front of the Ministry of Education detained
Baku / 02.06.20 / Turan: Public activist Gulnara Mehdiyeva on June 2 held a single picket in front of the Ministry of Education under the slogan: "The student’s demand is not a crime." In this way, she protested against the dispersal of student protests on June 1, demanding the abolition of tuition at universities for the second semester due to the quarantine regime.
“Students do not want to pay, and they are absolutely right, because their parents in quarantine had difficulty making ends meet. This requirement of students is fair,” Mehdiyeva said.
The police officers who arrived at the scene began to interfere with the picket and the work of journalists. Mehdiyeva, as well as former deputy MP Rabiya Mammadova and journalist Nargiz Apsalamova were detained.
A group of students and youth activists picketed the Ministry of Education under the slogans: “Cancel the fee!” and “Cancel exams!”
They demanded the cancellation of the summer examination session and payment for the second semester. The head of the Student Demand initiative group, Rustam Ismailbeyli, was arrested for 15 days on charges of violating the quarantine regime and not reporting to the police. Five more activists were fined. -03B06-
