EITI Offers Azerbaijan New Evaluation Plan
Today the International Steering Committee on Extracting Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) announced a final decision on Azerbaijan's fulfillment of its obligations in accordance with the standards of this organization.
A member of EITI International Board, economist Gubad Ibadoglu said the decision noted that Azerbaijan, as compared with the first estimate, has reached a certain level on a number of specific requirements.
With this in mind, the Steering Committee has retained the status of "candidate" for Azerbaijan.
At the same time, EITI has recognized unsatisfactory situation in Azerbaijan on Standards 1.3 - "Participation of civil society."
Therefore, the government is invited to prepare a new plan of corrective measures by the next meeting. If the execution plan is not satisfactory, then the membership of Azerbaijan in EITI will be suspended. The next meeting will be held on 8-9 March 2017.
Recall that the status of Azerbaijan in EITI was dropped to a "candidate" level a year ago due to the repression against NGOs and legislative measures to restrict the activities of civil society. -03D06-
