Eldaniz Guliyev Fined 1,000 Manat and Sentenced to Compulsory Public Works
On Thursday, the Nasimi District Court of Baku sentenced the movie director Eldaniz Guliyev to pay a fine of 1,000 manat and to perform obligatory community service for 480 hours. Thus, the director was found guilty of "libel" and "insult" of the police.
The verdict was passed on the claim of the Interior Minister Ramil Usubov.
Recall that on August 20 Guliyev criticized traffic police actions on his Facebook page. The Interior Minister saw this as an insult and defamation of all the police and filed a claim for defamation, claiming to attract Guliyev to criminal liability.
On October 20 Usubov’s representative offered to sentence Guliyev to a year of imprisonment.
Until the entry of the sentence into force Guliyev cannot leave the country. Within 20 days, he may appeal.
Guliyev said that he is being persecuted for his active citizenship and participation in the National Council of Democratic Forces.
However, he said he expected a "more difficult decision."
"In any case, this is a political decision. We do not agree with it and will appeal," Guliyev told Turan. -03S06-
