Baku/22.06.23/Turan: The Sumgayit city court sentenced today "Nida" youth civil movement board member Elmir Abbasov to 20 days of administrative arrest.

This was reported to Turan by lawyer Zibeyda Sadygova.

According to her, the police drew up a report against Abbasov under Article 510 (disorderly conduct) and 535.1 (failure to obey the police) of the Administrative Code.

Specifically, police alleged that Abbasov was "using foul language" in the street in Sumgayit and "failed to obey the police when called to order".

During the trial, Abbasov denied the police allegations and said that he had been detained in the courtyard of the house where he lived.

The judge dismissed administrative proceedings under Article 510, but upheld the charge under Article 535.1 and sentenced Abbasov to 20 days of administrative detention.

Abbasov complained of ill-treatment during his detention.

In particular, he pointed to a scratch on his neck and traces of wounds on his wrist due to the handcuffing.

In this regard, the judge announced that he would send this information to the city prosecutor's office for investigation.

The defence intends to appeal the court's decision.

Before the court session, Abbasov managed to shout out to his associates that he was not guilty of anything and was detained "for the exercise of freedom of expression".

Abbasov was detained on the evening of 21 June.

The Interior Ministry said the detention was due to his violation of public order.

However, the "NİDA" movement said he was detained due to his harsh criticism of police action when dispersing a protest action in the village of Söyüdlu. -16B21/06-
