Expert: "The situation with food safety is bad"
Baku/07.06.19/Turan: The situation with food security in Azerbaijan is not satisfactory, said Eyub Huseynov, the head of the Free Consumers Association, in an interview with Turan on the occasion of World Food Safety Day celebrated on June 7.
To confirm the bad food security situation in Azerbaijan, Huseynov mentioned the poisoning statistics and the creation of a special food safety agency two years ago.
He called another indicator of the severity of the food safety problem that no other food products are exported from Azerbaijan except for walnut, hazelnuts, fish and fish products.
Despite the large number of ecologically clean products in Azerbaijan, the conditions for their consumption are poor, Huseynov continued.
He sees a way out of the situation in the creation of an independent examination.
"I will give one example. I brought six products from Brazil and presented them to two of the three laboratories existing in the country. One of them concluded that there are no GMOs in these products. Another gave the correct answer that they have GMOs. Therefore, independent laboratories should be created, which could give correct answers, and not profitable results for suppliers," Huseynov said.
The Food Safety Agency reports daily dozens of complaints from citizens. They are mostly informational. However, there are also complaints of violation of consumer rights violations by business entities.
The latest statistics on food poisoning statistics in Azerbaijan refer to 2017.
That year, 362 cases of food poisoning were recorded in Azerbaijan; 565 people were poisoned, and six died.
On February 10, 2017, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a decree "On additional measures to improve the food safety system in Azerbaijan." In accordance with this document, the Food Safety Agency was established.
" A presidential decree of April 29, 2019 approved the State Program for Food Safety in Azerbaijan for 2019-2025. -21B-
