IBAHRI Condemns Suspension of Fakhraddin Mehdiyevs Advocacy
Baku / 23.03.18 / Turan: The International Bar Association Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) called for the abolition of the decision of the Bar of Azerbaijan to suspend the lawyers' activities of Fakhraddin Mehdiyev. This was stated by IBAHRI on March 22.
IBAHRI Director Philip Tahmindjis criticized the suspension of the licenses of a number of lawyers. "Decisions taken by lawyers with their clients do not belong to the functions of the Bar Association. On the contrary, the Bar Association should promote the independence of lawyers," he said.
Co-chairman of IBAHRI Hans Corell touched upon the latest changes in the field of legislation in Azerbaijan. In his opinion, changes in the legislation and deprivation of a number of lawyers of their licenses make legal representation of persons whose rights are violated difficult. "Lawyers should not face obstacles, harassment or interference in performing their official duties," said Corell.
Mehdiyev was suspended from advocacy for a period of 1 year on January 22. He was punished for transmitting the interview of Jahangir Hajiyev, a 15-year prisoner, former head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), to the media.
Mehdiyev rejected these accusations. He said his client had the right to respond to the media about the accusations against him and the insults he was facing. "Defending him in lawful ways is my lawyer's duty," said the lawyer.
Mehdiyev is also the lawyer of a number of publicly known people, including the leader of the movement Muslim Unity Taleh Bagirzadeh, deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party Fuad Gahramanli, and the brother-in-law of the leader of the same organization Ali Kerimli, Elnur Seyidov,
In November 2017, the Bar Association terminated the authority of another prominent human rights lawyer, Yalchin Imanov.
In recent years, a number of lawyers specializing in human rights activities have been removed from the bar. The list includes Khalid Bagirov, Alaif Hasanov, Aslan Ismayilov, and Elchin Namazov. -06D--
