Baku/25.07.23/Turan: The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan has reported a decline in the number of natural and man-made accidents in the country during the first half of 2023. A total of 7,024 incidents were recorded, showing a decrease of 747 cases or 10% compared to the same period last year. Tragically, these accidents resulted in the death of 33 people, with 138 others injured.

Breaking down the statistics, 125 natural accidents claimed the lives of 5 people and injured 7 more. On the other hand, 6,899 man-made accidents resulted in 28 fatalities and left 131 people injured.

The presence of numerous industrial and agricultural facilities, along with strategically important oil and gas pipelines and reservoirs, poses potential risks of man-made disasters in Azerbaijan.

The most common emergencies faced by the country include earthquakes, landslides, floods, droughts, rising water levels in rivers, and forest fires. However, Azerbaijan has made significant progress in studying and understanding both natural and man-made disasters.

In pursuit of enhancing emergency prevention and response, the Ministry of Emergency Situations collaborates with the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) to expand scientific and technical cooperation. Recently, discussions have begun on the development of an Atlas of Emergency Situations in Azerbaijan. This comprehensive atlas will include a map highlighting areas that may be at risk from a seismic perspective, thereby aiding in disaster preparedness and response efforts. ---05b06---
