Lawyers of Hashimli urged the court to acquit journalist
Baku/13.05.14/Turan : On the eve of the trial of journalist and human rights activist Parviz Hashimli concluding remarks were made by the lawyers.
Elchin Sadigov said Hashimli is persecuted for false and politically motivated charges.
In the view of Sadigov the journalist is prosecuted for criticizing MNS, friendship with Ali Naghiyev (former deputy head of the National Security Ministry, now deputy head of the Directorate for Anti-Corruption Prosecutor General), Veli Naghiyev (brother of Ali Naghiyev) and Javid Gurbanov ( head of the company Azeryolservis, MP).
Hashimli, according to the lawyer, "was the victim of intrigues within the government and its policies to suppress the opposition." Hashimli was threatened that if he did not oppose the PFPA leader Ali Kerimli and say that he received money from certain people in power to destabilize the situation in the country, he would be arrested.
When Hashimli declined, against him there was a provocation with imaginary weapons smuggling. So, it was a case of allegedly falsified delivery of weapons from Iran to the order of Hashimli.
After detention of Hashimli, MNS demanded from him to admit that he criticized MNS on the instructions from Ali Naghiyev and transferred money from Ali Naghiyev and Javid Gurbanov to PFPA leader Ali Kerimli. "At the same time he was threatened with rape, beaten on the head, face, knees and fists to the stomach. Subsequently he was many times beaten and tortured," continued the lawyer.
Hashimli’s home was searched, according to the lawyer, with violations of procedural rules.
MNS broke into the apartment by removing the iron bars on the window and told the wife of the journalist and his five year old daughter not to move. At the same time, they broke the surveillance camera in the yard and removed the card from it, the lawyer said.
Two other lawyers, Fariz Namazly and Bahruz Bayramov also claimed fraud the criminal case and urged the court to acquit Hashimli. The next court hearing will be held on May 14.
* Parviz Hashimli was arrested by MNS September 17, 2013. In March, the sentence was extended for another three months. He is accused of smuggling (Article 206.3.2) and illegal acquisition and possession of weapons (Article 228.2.1). -16B06-
