Leader of a religious group "Jafari Heyat" is convicted

Baku  Serious Crimes Court, chaired by Mail Bayramov,  convicted  Abgyul Suleymanov, the leader of the religious group "Jafari Heyat" ("The members of the Jafari".)

The court found Suleymanov guilty of illegal possession of weapons and drugs, inciting ethnic hatred, and sentenced him to 11 years in prison.

His lawyer Anar Gasimli  said  that the court was biased and registered. "I regard the sentence as the funeral of justice," said the lawyer.

Suleymanov was arrested last August in the village of Lahij in  Ismayilli region. At that time,  the  National Security Ministry (NSM) released an information about the arrest  of  Suleymanov and deputy chairman of the Islamic Party, Arif Ganiev, and editor of the site islamazeri.az, Ramin Bayramov.

NSM accused them of having links with the Iranian Cultural Centre in Baku, incitement to riot,  violation of public security and civil disobedience. However, later Bayramov and Ganiev were sentenced to 1.5 years in prison on charges of drug possession.  A month  ago Ganiev was  released on parole.
