Media experts about the latest tightening of media law
The Milli Majlis approved amendments to the media law, according to which media organ can be closed if during the year was twice subjected to judicial punishment. Turan agency surveyed media experts and journalists regarding the amendment.
The head of the Union of Journalists of the country and editor of "Ayna-Zerkalo" Elchin Shikhli called the changes "frivolous and insignificant." He recalled that in the previous version of the law had an article according to which the media authority is responsible if it was penalized three times. So far, this article has not been applied in reality. Then why to toughen legislation?
The editor of the newspaper "Azadlig", Rahim Hajili, said that the last change is one of the links in the chain, introduced in legislation in recent years to restrict human rights.
"This article is a real instrument of power against" disobedient "media through which you can" legally "to silence all unwanted," said Hajili. He believes that the government chose the path of open strangulation of a free press.
Lawyer Alasgar Mammadov believes that these changes are aimed at restricting the freedom of the press. This change is contrary to article of the European Convention on Freedom of Expression. "In fact, it is an attack on freedom of the press and expression," said Mammadov.
Media expert Arif Aliyev believes that the restrictions are more likely designed for psychological impact., and that the Parliament is involved in "unnecessary work" at such a difficult time. -05B04-
