On the Rights of Children in Azerbaijan
Baku / 01.06.18 / Turan: June 1 - International Children's Day, established on June 1, 1950 by the UN General Assembly. On June 21, 1992, Azerbaijan ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and also joined numerous international documents on the protection of the rights of children and the fight against the exploitation of child labor. According to the State Statistics Committee, in 2017 there were 2,219.8 million children (0-14 years) in Azerbaijan. There are 4,427 secondary schools in the country, 1,750 preschool institutions. The number of teachers is 156000.
On the occasion of the Children's Day, various events are held in Azerbaijan - conferences, concerts, festivities. Today all announcements in the Baku Metro are voiced by children. The head of the League for the Protection of the Rights of Children, Yusif Bekirov told Turan, in Azerbaijan the rights of children are protected by the state. "However, we do not like the work done with children. We want the rights of children to be protected at the level of the UN Convention on the Protection of Children's Rights," Bekirov said. According to him, in the country, along with free health care and education there are also paid. However, it can not be said that children are fully provided with quality medical care. Almost 100% of children are involved in education, but there is no need to talk about quality education.
Bekirov also touched upon the issue of the exploitation of child labor, which is not urgent, since many adults can not find work. Most of the children are exploited by their parents, forcing them to work on farms, in the fields. In cities, there are problems of homeless children living right in the streets. The state must solve this problem. And although shelters are open to such children, it is still not completely solved, Bekirov said. -03B-
