Baku/15.07.23/Turan: The Public Council of Talyshs of Azerbaijan (PCTA) has appealed to the deputies from the southern region of Azerbaijan and the Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Department, Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade (ethnic Talysh) in order to draw attention to the problems of education in the Talysh language.

The appeal points out that the Talyshs of Azerbaijan, who had been discriminated in their rights during the Soviet period, were active participants in the struggle for independence of the Republic, and later in the two Karabakh wars in defence of the territorial integrity of the country.

At the same time, the appeal points out that during the 32 years of Azerbaijan's independence, the rights of the Talyshs as reflected in the Constitution and international conventions have not been fully realised.

Even the optional classes on the Talysh language, which were included in the curricula once a week, are not carried out in practice.

Textbooks in the Talysh language were published for the last time 18 years ago and have practically not been preserved to date.

No university or college in the country trains the teaching staff to teach the Talysh language.

Representatives of state agencies sometimes show undeservedly disrespectful, discriminatory attitude towards Talyshs, the appeal continues.

The authors of the appeal call on deputies and Sheikhulislam to assist in solving the following issues:

- teaching of the Talysh language in general education schools up to the 9th grade in areas of compact residence of Talysh;

-publication of new textbooks of the Talysh language and the preparation of the curriculum by the Ministry of Science and Education before the beginning of the new academic year;

- establishment of the faculty of the Talysh language and literature at the Lankaran State University. -06B-
