PFPA Activist Abdullayev’s Sentence Reduced to 2.5 Years in Prison
The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has considered the cassation complaint of the youth activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Elvin Abdullayev. The court reclassified the charges on a grave article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale) into a softer one, 234.1 (illegal possession of drugs) and reduced the prison sentence from 6 to 2.5 years.
The defense expressed disagreement with the verdict, as it insisted on the justification of the activist. This decision will be filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights.
Abdullaev was arrested on January 8, 2015 after passing an exam. According to the police, he was allegedly seized heroin in the amount of 3 grams.
Abdullayev was charged under Article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale). However, the student said the drugs were planted and the charges were politically motivated. Human rights organizations have recognized him as a political prisoner. Amnesty International has recently announced Abdullayev a prisoner of conscience. -06d--
