Police Disrupt Musavat Meeting in Lankaran
Baku /21.09.19 / Turan: The general meeting of members of the Lankaran regional organization of the Musavat party, scheduled for September 22, was disrupted by the police. This was reported to Turan by the head of the district organization and member of the Board of Musavat, Yadigar Sadigly.
The meeting was to be held in Sadigly"s house in the city of Lankaran, 250 km south of Baku. It was also planned to elect delegates to the 9th congress of Musavat, which is scheduled for October 12.
However, in the morning, police forces blocked the way to Sadigly"s house from both sides of the street. The police, claiming that the meeting was "illegal," threatened the people with arrests.
At the same time, the head of the apparatus of the party, Gulaga Aslanly, the member of the party"s Control and Revision Commission Chingiz Ali, the member of the Musavat Majlis Gazanfar Bakhyshov, as well as the journalist Shamshad Aga, were subjected to ill-treatment and physical pressure. These actions were led by the deputy chief of the Lankaran district administration Faig Ilyasov, Sadigly continued.
He explained that the meeting was planned to be held in his house, since the authorities do not provide premises for the events of opposition organizations.
The head of the Musavat apparatus, Aslanly, in turn, said that even after leaving Lankaran, police and men in plainclothes persecuted the delegation from Baku almost to the vicinity of the capital.
He called the actions of the police to suppress the Musavat assembly unlawful, since the law on political parties does not prohibit the holding of meetings in houses and apartments. -06D--

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
