Afgan Mukhtarly Goes on Hunger Strike

Baku /22.09.19 / Turan: Journalist Afgan Mukhtarli, serving a prison sentence in prison No. 16, went on a hunger strike today. He protests against lawlessness and physical pressure on his lawyer Nemat Karimli. Mukhtarly"s statement is distributed on social networks.

"In protest of the lawlessness and violence committed against my lawyer on September 20, I am on a hunger strike. The deputy chief (of the prison) Emin Aliyev is distinguished by cruelty and the use of violence against political prisoners. Earlier, he had committed the use of force against Mammad Ibrahim. In general he is cruel and merciless towards the convicts. Complaints against him are not being investigated by the prosecutor"s office," Mukhtarly"s statement said.

He demanded that the country's leadership objectively investigate the incident with his lawyer.

"Emin Aliyev and other employees who commit violence should be punished. The actions committed against the lawyer are also aimed at violating my rights. Earlier, the lawyer, Nemat Karimli, was suspended from work for 1 year," Mukhtarly writes.

He draws attention to the fact that the "current attacks" occur after the recent visits to the prison by PACE rapporteur on political prisoners Sunna Torhildur Evarsdottir and CE Commissioner for Human Rights Dunia Miyatovic.

· On September 20, lawyer Nemat Karimli was twice subjected to thorough search and threats when entering the meeting with Mukhtarly and after meeting him. According to the lawyer, these illegal actions were led by the deputy head of the penitentiary Emin Aliyev, who read the defender"s notes made at the meeting with te journalist. Karimli said he would formally file a complaint with the Prison Service.

** Investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarly was abducted Tbilisi in May 2017, secretly transported to Azerbaijan and arrested. Subsequently, the court sentenced him to 6 years in prison on charges of smuggling and violence against a border guard.

Amnesty International recognizes Mukhtarly as a "prisoner of conscience." -21B-
