Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his wife arrived on February 6 in Sochi to participate in the official opening of the XXII Olympic Winter Games on February 7.
Azerbaijan at the Sochi Olympics will be represented by 4 legionnaires: Austrian Patrick Brahner (skiing), Italian Gaia Bassani Antivari (skiing), and the Russian skaters Alexei Sitnikov and Julia Zlobina (ice dancing) .
On the first day of the working visit Ilham Aliyev met with Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius and the Emir of Qatar , Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani , the website prezident.az. In both meetings they discussed the state and prospects of bilateral state relations.
The Olympics, which will be held February 7-23, brought together more than 60 heads of state and government and 40 million viewers. The competitions, where will be played 98 sets of medals, will be attended by six thousand athletes from 88 countries . The Olympics are also attended by 12,000 journalists , 25,000 volunteers, and 1.2 million tourists.
