The Court of Appeal upholds a fine against "Azadlig" newspaper
Baku Appeals Court today upheld a decision urging the newspaper "Azadlig" to pay the chief of Baku Metro Tagi Akhmedov a fine of 30,000 AZN. Such a decision previously adopted the Yasamal district court by allowing the claim of Akhmedov against the opposition newspaper.
According to the Media Rights Institute, an appeals court passed a ruling without considering a protest of the newspaper and its arguments. The paper intends to file an appeal to the Supreme Court. The lawsuit was filed in connection with the article entitled "Tagi Akhmedov appropriates five kopecks-coins" published in one of the June issues of the newspaper. The article claimed that when the fare in metro was 15 kopecks, balances on payment cards $5 kopecks for each coin 20 kopecks subsequently later were appropriated by the leadership of the metro. Ahmedov demanded the newspaper to pay compensation for moral damage amounting 200,000 AZN.—16D-
