The court refused Intigam Aliyev in leaving the country
The Sumgayit City Court chaired by Elman Mammadov considered the appeal of the human rights activist Intigam Aliyev who is serving his term on probation. He asked for the permission to leave the country to participate in several events in October and November. According to Aliyev, the court hearing was postponed several times. On October 18th the Court examined the appeal and rejected the request on the pretext that the law does not allow to leave the country on probation.
It is noteworthy that before the court has allowed Aliyev to leave the country and on 6-7 June he took part in the international conference in Strasbourg. This happened after an appeal to the Council of Europe leadership to the Azerbaijani government. At the conference, he talked about the problem of political prisoners, prevents the development of civil society in Azerbaijan, which irritated the authorities of Azerbaijan.
After that Aliyev went to Belgrade for a conference on the independence of judges and lawyers. Based on its results was prepared a critical report for discussion at the UN session. Apparently, the active participation of Aliyev at the conference in Strasbourg and Belgrade, as well as its activities in the working group, the announced recently a new list of political prisoners, caused indignation, and the authorities have decided not to let him to leave the country. Earlier, the court did not allow the journalist Khadija Ismayilova to leave the country.
Intigam Aliyev was invited to Strasbourg at a meeting of the Expert Council on NGO law the member of which he is. On October 20-21 was planned Aliyev’s participation in the discussions of the Azerbaijani government at the session of the UN Committee on Human Rights in Geneva.
Aliyev was also invited on 16-18 November to the meeting of the Global Legal Network for the sake of the public interest (PİLNet) in Amsterdam. Then he was invited to the 8th meeting of the Civil Society Forum of "Eastern Partnership" on November 28-29 in Brussels.
* Intigam Aliyev was arrested in August 2014, and was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of economic crimes. On March 28, the Supreme Court changed the real term to the probation term for a period of 5 years. -06B--
